New Delhi: In an important move the Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of six accused, including Nalini and RP Ravichandran, serving life imprisonment in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The court applied its May 18 2022 judgement of releasing AG Perarivalan to the remaining life convicts, noting that the criteria established for Perarivalan were met in the case of the remaining convicts as well.
The court released S Nalini, Jaykumar, RP Ravichandran, Robert Pias, Suthendraraja, and Sriharan through this order. They were found to have good behaviour in jail and had all obtained various degrees during their confinement.
The court noted that the Tamil Nadu cabinet recommended their release on September 9, 2018, and that this opinion will be binding on the Governor, in front of whom the convicts had filed a remission plea.
