In a bid to strengthen passenger safety and security measures, the North Central Railway (NCR) has announced plans to install CCTV cameras in all passenger coaches across Prayagraj, Jhansi and Agra divisions. A total of 1,782 coaches, including 895 Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) and 887 Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches, will be covered under this mega project.
This camera installation drive is part of NCR’s comprehensive strategy to ensure safe travel for millions of passengers travelling across these important railway divisions. Officials said the process will be rolled out in a phased manner, with important trains like Prayagraj-Dr. Ambedkar Nagar Express, Kalindi Express, Prayagraj-Lalgarh Express, Subedarganj-Dehradun Express, Subhedarganj-Meerut City Sangam Express, and Subhedarganj-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Jammu Mail being given priority in the first phase.
In particular, premium trains like Prayagraj Express and Shramshakti Express will be fitted with modern AI-enabled cameras that will allow real-time tracking and enhanced surveillance. The technology will quickly identify suspicious activities and alert authorities, helping to prevent potential incidents.
Each AC coach be it first, second, third class or chair car will be fitted with four high-quality cameras. General coaches, SLR coaches and pantry cars will be fitted with six cameras each to ensure comprehensive surveillance. These cameras will be able to record clear videos even at speeds of over 100 kmph and perform well in low light, making them ideal for the dynamic environment of Indian Railways.
The cameras will be installed at locations that allow full coverage of passenger movements, such as at entrances and corridors. The video footage will be monitored in real time at NCR headquarters and divisional railway manager offices in Agra, Jhansi and Prayagraj to enable prompt response.
NCR Chief Public Relations Officer Shashikant Tripathi said, “This initiative reflects the Railways’ dedication towards safe travel. It will help in preventing illegal activities and help in prompt investigation and monitoring.”
Passenger safety has now become an important priority in Indian Railways, especially in view of the increasing passenger numbers and changing security situation. This installation of CCTV cameras will play a vital role in crime control and strengthen passenger confidence.
This move is in line with the Indian Railways’ digital transformation plan, which includes installing CCTV cameras at stations and implementing AI-based security systems across the country. Modernization of railways as well as adoption of technological security measures is an important initiative towards creating a safe and passenger-friendly rail network.
