New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Wednesday resumed his padyatra in Telangana’s Hyderabad. On Tuesday, Gandhi had visited Chaarminar and hoisted national flag.
In yesterday’s episode of Bharat Jodo Yatra, mother of PHD student late Rohith Vemula walked alongside Gandhi.
“Rohith Vemula is, and will remain a symbol of my struggle against social discrimination and injustice. By meeting Rohit’s mother, the steps towards the goal of the journey got new courage, and new strength to the mind,” wrote Rahul Gandhi on Twitter.
Vemula died by suicide in 2016 after a local unit of Akhil Bahratiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student union of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), filed a complaint against the former.
Vemula also lost his fellowship of Rs 25,000 for raising “issues under the banner of the Ambedkar Students Association” (ASA). After which, the PHD scholar along with four others was thrown out of the hostel room for failing to pay the rent.
Having no place to stay, Rohith along with his friends had set up tents in the camps and staged protests. However, he was brutally ignored by the administration.
After which, Rohith died by suicide with a flag of ASA terming his birth a “fatal accident” in a letter found on him.
