New Delhi: Days after being convicted in the “Modi Surname” defamation case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will appear in a Gujarat court on Monday to appeal against the decision. Gandhi was sentenced of two-years of jail for his controversial remarks.

Gandhi will be urging the sessions court in Surat to set aside the verdict, which convicted him in the matter that resulted in loosing his Lok Sabha membership. The remarks were allegedly seen as a derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As per media sources, the Congress MP will also appeal for an interim stay on the conviction that can help restoring his membership of the Lok Sabha.

Congress Delegation To Be Presented

Congress’ top leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the Chief Ministers of three Congress-ruled states – Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu —- will accompany Rahul Gandhi.

Meanwhile, the Congress delegation has been accused of going Surat with the intentions of ‘pressurizing the judiciary’. Reacting to which, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said they will be there to shore up ‘a significant leader of their party’.

He said, “No one can pressurise judiciary. We are going to Surat. Congress is the main opposition party and Rahul Gandhi is big leader of our party. This is not a political drama. We stand by him…”

Cops Deployed, Movements Being Monitored 

Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Surat, the police have beefed up the security at the possible spots where the movement is expected.

Congress Workers Raise Placards Outside Court 

On the other hand, workers of the grand-old party gathered outside District and Sessions Court in Surat in support of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The workers were seen holding posters questioning relationship between Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
