Bengaluru: Karnataka police Friday detained Congress state president DK Shivakumar and other party leaders who were protesting against the Surat Court verdict against Rahul Gandhi.

A number of protest has erupted by the grand-old party after a court in Gujarat convicted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a 2019 defamation case. The case pertained to a remark of Rahul Gandhi at a Lok Sabha polls rally in Karnataka on April 13, 2019.

“Why all the thieves, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi, have Modi in their names,” Gandhi allegedly said during the rally.

On Thursday, the court awarded imprisonment of 2 years to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. Later, the court granted bail to Gandhi. Meanwhile, the order has been suspended for next 30 days so that the Congress MP can appeal in the High Court.

Meanwhile, the Congress has decided to hold a march against the court’s verdict on Friday at Vijay Chowk in Delhi. As per media reports, AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh informed that the march will begin from Parliament till Vijay Chowk.

“We will hold protests across Delhi and in other states on Monday on this issue. The matter is just not a legal issue, but also a serious political issue linked with the future of democracy in the country,” PTI quoted Jairam Ramesh.
