Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently reacted to the criticism against his statements on religious freedom. Gandhi says the BJP “is desperate to silence him” after the former Congress President made controversial remarks in the US, which drew flak from many BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On September 9, while addressing Herndon, Virginia, Gandhi questioned a Sikh audience member, “Will Sikhs be free to wear turbans, ‘kadas,’ and visit gurdwaras in India?” He further added, “This is not just the fight for Sikhs but for all religions. We believe that every state, tradition, and language is equally important.”

BJP’s Response and Gandhi’s Counter

The BJP leaders alleged that Gandhi intended to divide India. Karnataka BJP even filed a police complaint against him because of his remarks.

Vowing to continue raising his voice for diversity, equality, and freedom, Gandhi took to X and defended himself by asking the Sikh community whether they found anything wrong in what he said. He seemed to go all out to attack the BJP for spreading lies.

PM Modi’s Take on It

Prime Minister Modi once took the name of Rahul Gandhi, while addressing an event in Maharashtra he said, Congress leaders are speaking against India in abroad. The congress leadership was addressed as part of “tukde tukde gang” and “urban Naxals,” who were accused to be abetting the spree of breaking the country and insulting Indian culture.

Previous Reservation Comments

Another controversy brewing earlier during his visit to the US was on reservations in India. Gandhi had said that reservations may be reconsidered when India becomes a fair place. He later clarified that this comment was misunderstood and reaffirmed. The Congress plans to continue reservations beyond the 50% limit under the present system.
