Punjab: In a spirited endeavor to transform Punjab into a bastion of progressive ideals, the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took a monumental step towards eradicating the archaic practice of child marriage. On November 27, 2024, a statewide oath-taking ceremony was held to promote ‘Child Marriage Free India’ in Punjab – a ceremony that sought to unite citizens across the state in a shared commitment against this societal malaise. The event was broadcast live, providing a digital platform for participants to pledge together in solidarity.

Drive Against Child Marriage

The announcement was made by Dr. Baljit Kaur, the Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development in Punjab. She highlighted the mission’s significance in eliminating child marriage and securing a better future for the young hearts of Punjab.

With heartfelt alignment, she invited various community groups to actively partake in the initiative: self-help groups, Anganwadi and ASHA workers, marriage prohibition officers, local community leaders and educators, students from schools and colleges, Panchayati raj institutions, elected representatives from urban local bodies, community health practitioners, and members of civil society organizations. This massive outreach is a call to action for doctors, legal service authorities, state and district bar council members, and religious leaders to come together under one banner.

In a passionate entreaty, Dr. Baljit Kaur emphasized the critical role of collective action. She urged all sectors of society to unite in making the campaign a resounding success, encouraging elected officials, healthcare workers, and educators to amplify awareness and take a bold stand against child marriage.

“A child marriage-free state isn’t just a dream; it is a vital necessity for the all-around development of our children and our society,” Dr. Kaur proclaimed with conviction.
