Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann demands action in IPS Y Puran Kumar’s death, urges Haryana govt to act

The Punjab Chief Minister appealed that the Haryana government must book the “blue-eyed officers” named by late IPS Kumar in his suicide note.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann recently met the family of late Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar in Chandigarh. While conveying condolences to the bereaved family, he urged the Haryana government to take strict action and ensure justice to the victim. Meanwhile, he called Puran’s death “a slap on the face of society,” and that his family needs justice, not sympathy.

CM Bhagwant Mann Appeals For Justice

The Punjab Chief Minister said that the Haryana government must book the “blue-eyed officers” named by late IPS Kumar in his suicide note. He said that the government cannot disregard the law to protect its favorites. “If a senior officer like Y Puran Kumar had to plead for dignity, what hope does a common man have? This is not just a tragedy; it is a mirror to our society’s bias,” CM Bhagwant Mann said.

He referred to the incident as an attack on the Dalit community and said that the case reflected a ‘larger conspiracy’ to harass officers. “Such educated officers are made to cry for justice. Is it so difficult to see a poor man on a big chair?” he asked, citing it as an example of institutionalized discrimination.

CM Mann Seeks Governor’s Intervention

CM Bhagwant Mann said he has appealed Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit to intervene in the case and ensure a fair probe. “The Governor must sit with the family and officers to ensure the guilty do not go unpunished,” he said, adding that both the Union and Haryana governments must act decisively. “No one is above the law.”

About The Suicide Case

On October 7, Y. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer and former DGP of Haryana, shot himself in his official residence in Chandigarh. Police recovered a purported suicide note from the spot, in which Kumar accused senior colleagues of caste discrimination, harassment, and humiliation. At the time of the incident, his wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kaur, was on a tour to Japan. Puran Kumar was cremated about a week later after a post-mortem examination.
