Punjab: Death Toll Rises To Two After Multi-Storey Under-Construction Building Collapses In Mohali

Mohali SSP, Deepak Pareek stated that, "Operation is underway. We have no such estimate as to how many people are trapped there."

A 20-year-old woman was killed and several others were trapped after a multi-storey under-construction building collapsed in Punjab’s Mohali on Saturday evening. However, the death toll has now risen to two following the recovery of another body from the site on Sunday. The incident took place in the Sohana area in Mohali. Police reached the spot after getting alert about the incident.

The 20-year-old victim was rescued from the rubble by the National Disaster Management Force in critical condition and was immediately rushed to Sohana Hospital, Viraj S Tidke, Officiating DC said.

The NDRF team is on the spot and the rescue operation is going on. Several people could be trapped under the debris of the building collapsed.

NDRF official Baljit Singh said that, “It has been about 1-2 hours since the rescue operation began. A girl of about 22 years has been rescued. She has been referred to the hospital…rescue operation is on.”

Mohali SSP, Deepak Pareek stated that, “Operation is underway. We have no such estimate as to how many people are trapped there. NDRF, police and fire department teams are at the spot. The reason behind this mishap will be investigated.”

AAP MP Malwinder Singh Kang said that, “As soon as I came to know about this, I spoke to the District Commissioner. The administration is engaged in rescue work. It is not yet confirmed how many people were present (during the time of collapse).”

He further said that, “Our aim right now is to save people and ensure that there is no loss of life.”

According to media reports, the building collapsed while excavation work was underway at the neighbouring building.
