Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced that Rahul Gandhi will continue to represent the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh and will vacate the Wayanad seat in Kerala.

Kharge further stated that Priyanka Gandhi will be contesting from the now vacant Wayanad seat, marking her entry into electoral politics.

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi contested from two constituencies: Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala. However, since a Member of Parliament can only represent one seat, he was required to vacate one of them.

While Raebareli remains a stronghold of the Gandhi family within the Congress party, Wayanad served as Rahul’s additional constituency in the 2019 elections, where he secured consecutive victories. Rahul first won from Wayanad in 2019 after losing his long-held seat of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, which had been a bastion for the family for the past 15 years.

Leading up to this year’s Lok Sabha elections, there was speculation that Rahul Gandhi would contest from a second constituency alongside Wayanad. The discussion centered on whether he would choose to run from his former stronghold of Amethi or his mother Sonia Gandhi’s constituency of Raebareli. Before the elections, Sonia Gandhi moved to the Rajya Sabha, leaving her Raebareli seat vacant.
