Police Commemoration Day: From Prime Minister Modi to Rajnath Singh, Leaders Salute the Bravery of Police Forces

October 21 holds great significance as it marks the day in 1959 when ten courageous policemen lost their lives in an ambush by the Chinese Army at Hot Springs in Ladakh.

To honour the everlasting memory of the gallant policemen who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, October 21 is observed every year as ‘Commemoration Day’ by the police forces all over India.

October 21 holds great significance as it marks the day in 1959 when ten courageous policemen lost their lives in an ambush by the Chinese Army at Hot Springs in Ladakh. Despite facing an unequal confrontation within Indian territory, they stood their ground with bravery. To honour their sacrifice, the Conference of Directors General/Inspectors General of Police in 1962 declared that October 21 would be observed annually as Police Commemoration Day.

On this Police Commemoration Day, political heavyweights and leaders across India honoured police personnel who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting the integrity of the nation. Several leaders took a bow today to commemorate the superior sacrifice of the constabulary. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday laid a wreath and paid homage to police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty during the Police Commemoration Day programme held at the Police Parade Ground in Naigaon, Mumbai.

CM Fadnavis offered floral tributes to the brave police personnel who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also took a bow to pay homage to police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty during the Police Commemoration Day programme held at the Police Memorial at the Centre for Police Research in Pune.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to the courage and sacrifice of India’s police personnel. He acknowledged their unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation and its citizens.
In a message on X today, the Prime Minister said:

“On Police Commemoration Day, we salute the courage of our police personnel and recall the supreme sacrifice by them in the line of duty. Their steadfast dedication keeps our nation and people safe. Their bravery and commitment in times of crisis and in moments of need are appreciable.”

Before Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh participated in the Police Commemoration Day programme at the National Police Memorial in Delhi on Tuesday.

He emphasized the importance of unity between the Army and the Police in ensuring national security, and he further stated that both the forces share the same spirit in safeguarding the country.
