New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephonic conversation with United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres and urged him to ensure an early investigation into the recent attack on Indian peacekeepers in Congo.

The two leaders discussed the recent attack on the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), in which two Indian peacekeepers were martyred.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the UN Security General to ensure a speedy investigation to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice. PM Modi underlined India’s enduring commitment to UN peacekeeping, with over 2,50,000 Indian peacekeepers working under UN peacekeeping missions so far. 177 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice while serving in UN peacekeeping missions, the largest by any military contribution country.

“Spoke to UNSG @antonioguterres to discuss the shocking attack on the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo, in which 2 brave BSF personnel lost their lives. Urged quick investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice,” PM Narendra Modi said in a statement on Twitter.

The UN Secretary-General expressed his condolences to the families of the two martyred Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, as well as to the government and people of India. He reiterated his unequivocal condemnation of the attack against MONUSCO and assured all possible action in a speedy investigation.

PM Modi also underlined India’s unwavering support for peace and stability among the democratic people of Congo, where around 2040 Indian troops are currently stationed in Monusco.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday called on Congolese authorities to swiftly investigate the deaths of two Indians and a Moroccan peacekeeper. The UNSC adopted a press statement submitted by India and France, condemning the recent deaths of two Indians and a Moroccan peacekeeper in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

UN Security Council (UNSC) members strongly condemned the recent attacks on the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in North Kivu, which resulted in the death of three peacekeepers from India and Morocco, as well as the wounding of several soldiers .

He underlined that deliberate attacks targeting peacekeepers could constitute a war crime under international law. He called on the Congolese authorities to swiftly investigate these attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice, and to inform relevant military and police-contributing countries of progress in line with Security Council Resolution 2518 (2020).

They requested the Secretary-General for an update in line with paragraph 4 (a) of Security Council Resolution 2589 on measures taken to promote accountability for such acts. Members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to India and Morocco. He also expressed condolences to the United Nations and the civilians who lost their lives.

UN Security Council (UNSC) members called on all parties to fully cooperate with MONUSCO and remain committed to the full and purposeful implementation of the mission’s mandate. The Council stressed the importance of MONUSCO having the necessary capacity to carry out and promote its mandate, including taking appropriate additional measures, the security of UN peacekeepers and its operation, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
