New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Japan next week to attend the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will also separately meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Japan on 27 September 2022 to attend the State Funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving leader of modern Japan, was gunned down in July while campaigning for a parliamentary election.

The Japanese government has scheduled the state funeral for Abe on September 27. The ceremony will take place at Nippon Budokan arena in the Kitanomaru National Garden in Tokyo.

According to Japanese news agency Kyodo, around 4,300 people are expected to attend the service to be held Tuesday in a hall in Tokyo. Of them, roughly 700 people are likely to travel to Japan from 218 countries, regions and international organizations. The figure includes 49 incumbent and former leaders from overseas.

Besides PM Modi, US Vice President Kamala Harris, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck Soo are among others to attend the state funeral.
