PM Modi To Visit China For First Time Since Galwan Clash, To Attend Key SCO Summit

The visit would signify renewed efforts by both nations to improve bilateral ties. The two leaders last met during the BRICS summit in Russia in October 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China on August 31 to attend the key regional summit organised by the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation). This would be the Prime Minister’s first visit to China after relations between the two nations were strained by the 2020 military stand-off in Galwan, along the LAC in eastern Ladakh.

The visit would signify renewed efforts by both nations to improve bilateral ties. The two leaders, PM Modi and Xi Jinping, last met during the BRICS summit in Russia in October 2024.

SCO Summit on August 31–September 1

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organisations will attend the Tianjin Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and related events next month. The SCO Tianjin Summit will be held from August 31 to September 1, Wang said during a joint press meeting with the SCO secretary.

Beyond China, PM Modi will also be visiting Japan in August, where he will meet with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. PM Modi’s visit to Japan would be his first since May 2023, when he attended the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima, western Japan.
