Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke to Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and condemned the incident of a shoe being hurled at him in the Supreme Court. In a social media post, the Prime Minister called the incident a “reprehensible act,” stating that it “has angered every Indian.” Meanwhile, he praised BR Gavai for his composure during the disturbing act.
“Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable. I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation. It highlights his commitment to the values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Earlier in the day, a 71-year-old lawyer named Rakesh Kishore attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai. The incident occurred around 11.35 during proceedings in the Supreme Court, but the attempt was foiled by the security. According to Delhi Police, the advocate, a resident of Delhi’s Mayur Vihar, removed his sports shoes and threw them at CJI Gavai. While being escorted out of the court, he was heard saying, “Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahega.” (Insult to Sanatan Dharma cannot be tolerated)
However, the CJI remained unfazed and asked the lawyers present in court to continue with their arguments. “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” he said. The incident happened when the bench led by the CJI was hearing the Lord Vishnu idol matter.
CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi also condemned the attack on the Chief Justice, saying, “No words are adequate to condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court itself. It is an assault not just on him, but on our Constitution as well. Chief Justice Gavai has been very gracious, but the nation must stand in solidarity with him unitedly with a deep sense of anguish and outrage.”
