New Delhi: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the India- Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline on March 18 via video conference.

According to the PMO, this is the first cross-border energy pipeline between two neighbouring nations.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline on 18th March via video conference,” said PMO

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 377 crore, of which a portion of the pipeline built in Bangladesh cost approx rs 285 crore, which has been borne by the Indian government under Grant assistance, Said Prime Minister’s office.

The pipeline can transport 1 Million Metric Ton High-Speed Diesel per Annum. Initially, the pipeline service will be available for seven Northern districts of Bangladesh, PMO added.

The foundation stone of the friendship pipeline was held by PM Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2018. 

According to an accord between New Delhi and Dhaka, fuel oil will be transported to Bangladesh for 15 years for the first steps then it would be extended further with the consent of the two nations.
