PM Modi Inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel! A Milestone In Connectivity And National Defense

The new tunnel dramatically reduces travel time on a route previously prone to avalanches, slashing the journey from over 30 minutes to just 10 minutes.

Z-Morh Tunnel

Z-Morh Tunnel: In a landmark event for India’s infrastructure and defense capabilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel on Monday. This strategic project, located in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir, establishes a vital link between Gagangir and the stunning tourist destination of Sonamarg, significantly enhancing connectivity in the region while addressing security concerns related to China and Pakistan.

The Z-Morh tunnel, measuring 6.5 kilometers in length and situated at an impressive altitude of 8,652 feet above sea level, is expected to facilitate the swift movement of security forces to Ladakh. The construction of this ambitious project began in May 2015 under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and is part of a larger initiative that includes the ongoing Zoji La tunnel project.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Union Ministers Nitin Jairam Gadkari and Dr. Jitendra Singh, along with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The Prime Minister inaugurated the tunnel from the East Portal, followed by a tour of the structure with other dignitaries.

One of the most significant benefits of the Z-Morh tunnel is its potential to make Sonamarg accessible from Srinagar throughout the year, overcoming the seasonal challenges. Strategic experts have underscored the importance of the Z-Morh tunnel, noting that it will provide all-weather connectivity to Ladakh—a region that frequently experiences isolation due to heavy snowfall. The idea to connect Ladakh with Kashmir gained momentum following the logistical difficulties faced by defense forces during the Kargil conflict in 1999.

The new tunnel dramatically reduces travel time on a route previously prone to avalanches, slashing the journey from over 30 minutes to just 10 minutes. This improvement is set to enhance India’s defense posture in the sensitive Ladakh and Kargil sectors, where Indian troops are stationed along critical borders with Pakistan and China.

Looking ahead, the future Zoji La tunnel—currently under construction—will further bolster connectivity by bypassing the treacherous Zoji La Pass. Expected to be completed in approximately two years, this 14-kilometer U-shaped structure will enhance operational efficiency for military logistics while improving civilian access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.

With the inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel, India is making significant strides toward achieving uninterrupted surface connectivity with Ladakh, reinforcing its commitment to national security and regional development.
