Prime Minister Modi arrived in the Maldives on Friday. The trip began with the 60th Independence Day celebrations, where he attended as the Guest of Honour. The occasion also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The relationship between India and the Maldives took a twist when President Muizzu assumed office and openly made sardonic comments about India. He further called for an “India Out” campaign and expressed his desire to align with China in late 2023. Prime Minister’s trip will aim towards the betterment of relations between the two countries.
Commenting on the relationship, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the Maldives is a very close partner in our neighbourhood – an important part of India’s Neighbourhood First policy – and integral to the MAHASAGAR vision of India, which stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
Misri further mentioned the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a ‘Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’ that was finalised last year. Prime Minister Modi will also be inaugurating several India-assisted development projects in the island nation.
G. Balasubramanian, the High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, said that various MoUs will be signed between India and the Maldives during Prime Minister Modi’s visit. PM Modi received an official welcome at Republic Square in Malé, Maldives.
