New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated Mallikarjun Kharge for becoming Indian National Congress party’s new president. Kharge is the first non-Gandhi family president of the party since 24 years.

Prime Minister took to the Twitter to congratulate him for becoming new president of the party. In his message to Kharge, he said “My best wishes to Shri Mallikarjun Kharge Ji for his new responsibility as President of
@INCIndia. May he have a fruitful tenure ahead.”

Mallikarjun Kharge is the first non-Gandhian president of Congress which is the country’s 137-year-old political party. Mallikarjun Kharge got more than 7 thousand votes out of 9000 votes. Whereas, Shashi Tharoor, who received behind 1,072 votes, congratulated president-elect Mallikarjun Kharge. Kharge is deemed top have close relations with the Gandhi family.

After the refusal of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, several senior leaders of the party showed interest for the post of Congress President. First of them all was Shashi Tharoor, then Ashok Gehlot came forward to take up the fight. Other senior leaders Kamal Nath, Digvijay Singh also gave signs to file their nominations but didn’t go ahead. Finally, Mallikarjun Kharge came forward to file his nomination for the top post in the party.
