New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Leo Varadkar on his reelection as the head of the Irish government and said he looks forward to working together to realise the full potential of vibrant economies.

Modi tweeted, “Congratulations Leo Varadkar on assuming office as Taoiseach for the second time. Highly value our historical ties, shared constitutional values & multi-faceted cooperation with Ireland. Look forward to working together to realise the full potential of our vibrant economies.”

Leo Varadkar, former Irish Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Fine Gael party, was elected as the new prime minister of Ireland following a vote in the lower house of the Irish parliament on Saturday.

A total of 87 members of the house voted in favour of his nomination as the new prime minister while 62 members voted against it on Saturday.

This is the second time that Varadkar has been elected as Irish prime minister. He first became the Irish prime minister in June 2017. In June 2020, the Fine Gael party led by Varadkar formed a coalition government with Fianna Fail and Green Party, in which he served as deputy prime minister and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
