New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed pain on the passing away of Anand Mamani, the Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.

Mamani, the three-time BJP MLA and deputy speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, passed away late on Saturday night after a prolonged illness.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said: “Pained by the passing away of Shri Anand Mamani, the Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly. He was a formidable leader who worked extensively for social empowerment. He also worked to strengthen the BJP across Karnataka. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”

Mamani, 56, suffered from diabetes and a liver condition. He was receiving care at Bengaluru’s Manipal Hospital. On the recommendation of a medical professional, he was initially transferred to Chennai for treatment before being transferred to Manipal hospital. He had recently spent several days in a coma.

Mamani represented the Savadatti constituency as an MLA. His father Chandrashekhar M Mamani had also served as the deputy speaker in the 1990s.

On Sunday, his mortal remains will be taken to his hometown so that people can pay their respects.
