Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday became the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of India in consecutive terms, surpassing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s record. PM Narendra Modi has completed 4,078 consecutive days in office, placing him just behind Jawaharlal Nehru.
The record for the longest unbroken stint is held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Prime Minister Modi has matched Nehru’s record of winning three successive Lok Sabha elections—in 2014, 2019, and 2024.
On the occasion, BJP MP and National Spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, “PM Narendra Modi has completed 4,078 consecutive days of his tenure. Surpassing Indira Gandhi’s record, after Jawaharlal Nehru, he has become the longest-serving PM… On one hand, the other two PMs’ tenures had black chapters of arbitrariness; this tenure has golden chapters of development. PM Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister who was elected through a public mandate. Whereas, when Indira ji and Nehru ji became the PMs for the first time, it was not through a public mandate but due to the situation. But on this occasion, a Jharkhand Minister, Ansari ji, made a petty and insulting remark about PM Modi. This shows the disgusting mindset of Congress once again.”

Prime Minister Modi has now earned the distinction of being the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister, and the first such leader to serve two full terms. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, also from the BJP, was elected three times, first in 1996, when he took the oath for a government that lasted only 13 days. In 1998, he headed the government for 13 months before it fell to a no-confidence motion. He was finally re-elected in 1999 and completed a full term. However, he was unable to serve more than one full term.
