New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and lay the foundation stone for projects worth over Rs 4,400 crore in Bhuj, Gujarat, on Sunday. Modi also opened the Sardar Sarovar Project’s Kachchh Branch Canal.
The Canal is around 357 km long overall; the Prime Minister officially opened a portion of the Canal in 2017. All 948 villages and 10 municipalities in the Kachchh region would have access to potable water thanks to the canal’s irrigation features.

He had already opened the Smriti Van Memorial in the Bhuj district. Smriti Van is a pioneering programme that was conceived by the prime minister. It was constructed on a 470-acre plot of land to honour the community’s spirit of resiliency following the deaths of over 13,000 people during the 2001 earthquake, which had Bhuj as its epicentre. The names of those who perished in the earthquake are listed on the Memorial.
The Prime Minister emphasised Kutch’s wealth and prosperity while recalling one of the Panch Pran’s declarations, “Pride in our Heritage,” made from the Red Fort’s ramparts. Modi remarked on the Dholavira’s skill in constructing cities.
He said, “Dholavira has been given the status of World Heritage Site only last year. Each brick of Dholavira shows the skills, knowledge and science of our ancestors.” Similarly, honouring the freedom fighters who were ignored for long is also part of taking pride in one’s heritage. He recalled the privilege of bringing back the remains of Shyamji Krishna Varma. Memorial at Mandvi and Statue of Unity are also major steps in this regard, he said.
The growth of Kutch, the Prime Minister emphasised, is a superb illustration of a significant transformation brought about by “Sabka Prayas.” “Kutch is not just a place, but it is a spirit, a living feeling. It is this spirit which shows us the way to the fulfillment of the colossal resolutions of the Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal”, the Prime Minister said.
Bhupendra Patel, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, State Ministers Kiritsinh Vaghela and Jitubhai Chaudhary, Members of Parliament C R Patil and Vinod L Chav-da, Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly Nimaben Acharya, and others attended the event.
