The PM Awas Yojana, which has transformed India’s housing landscape, has introduced a significant change. Going forward, the benefits of the PM Housing Scheme will be available exclusively in the name of women. For homes that have already been approved in men's names, the name of the female head will now be added. If your dream of owning a home remains unfulfilled, the PM Housing Scheme offers you a chance to make it a reality. This central government initiative benefits both urban and rural communities.
What Is The Major Change?
Meanwhile, a major update has been made in the housing rules under the government schemes in Uttar Pradesh. Significant changes have been introduced to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) and Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana (Rural) in the state. Going forward, permission to build a house will only be granted in the name of women. The inclusion of the female head’s name has become mandatory under these schemes.

However, certain relaxations have been made under specific conditions. All new houses under these schemes will now be approved only in the name of the female head. Additionally, the names of male heads will be added to houses that were previously approved in men’s names. The aim of this move is to empower women economically and socially in both rural and urban areas, allowing them to become self-reliant by owning their own homes.

Initiative To Promote Women Ownership
According to the Rural Development Department, currently, 40.14% of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana are approved in the name of the female head. Additionally, 51.74% of houses are approved in the joint name of husband and wife. In total, 91.87% of houses are either in the name of the female head or under joint ownership.
Under the Chief Minister Housing Scheme, 29.25% of houses are in the name of the female head, while 37.78% are approved in the joint name of husband and wife. Following this change, nearly all new houses will now be allotted in the name of the female head.
What About The Other States
There has been no change in the rules of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in other states of India. This specific change to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) has been implemented solely by the Uttar Pradesh government. The new rule will be applicable only in Uttar Pradesh, while the scheme will continue as usual in other states.
