In a historic win, former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma son Parvesh Verma, two time Member of Parliament defeated former Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party Chief, Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi Assembly constituency.
Who Is Parvesh Verma?
Parvesh Verma was born on November 7, 1977. He went to Delhi Public School in RK Puram and Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. He also has a master’s degree in business administration from the Fore School of Management.
Verma’s father, Sahib Singh Verma, was a senior BJP leader and former Delhi chief minister13. His uncle, Azad Singh, was the mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and ran for office in Mundka in 2013.
Verma was first elected to the Delhi assembly in 2013, representing Mehrauli, where he beat Yoganand Shastri of Congress15. Shastri was the Speaker of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha at the time. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 and 2019 from the West Delhi constituency. He did not run in the 2024 elections.
As a Member of Parliament, he was on the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament and the Standing Committee on Urban Development.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Verma beat Mahabal Mishra of Congress by 578,486 votes, setting a record for the highest victory margin in Delhi.
Verma is known for making controversial statements. In 2020, the Election Commission banned him for 24 hours after he called Arvind Kejriwal a “terrorist”.
