A long-pending discussion on air pollution is expected to be taken up during the Parliament’s winter session on Thursday, with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, who is slated to address the issue.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on December 12 called the plummeting air quality a “national health emergency” affecting millions. The leader urged the House for a bipartisan approach, emphasising that air pollution should not be treated as an ideological issue.
The Lok Sabha, in the wee hours of Wednesday, completed the discussion on the new rural jobs bill that seeks to replace the 20-year-old MGNREGA Act.
The discussion on the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (GRAMIN) Bill, 2025, concluded past midnight on Wednesday and saw the participation of 98 members. The Lok Sabha was adjourned at 1:35 AM.After an extensive discussion and debate on Thursday the bill has been passed in Lok Sabha.
The Lok Sabha is scheduled to take up a discussion on air pollution in the Delhi capital region as well. Beyond Lop Priyanka Gandhi, DMK member K. Kanimozhi and BJP member Bansuri Swaraj have also given notices for raising the discussion.

The Lok Sabha has passed the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin): VB–G RAM G Bill, 2025.
The bill aims to ensure employment and livelihood security in rural areas. It has been introduced to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005.

During a parliamentary discussion on air pollution, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said , “Today, breathing in Delhi has become difficult, speaking has become difficult. The people of Delhi are trapped in a gas chamber, feeling suffocated… For 11 years, the Modi government has been in power at the centre.
What have they done? I also hold the previous AAP government responsible. Both of these have made life difficult in Delhi, making it hard for the common man to breathe.” He criticized both the central and the previous Delhi government for making life challenging for residents of the city.

Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav questioned whether Parliament would conduct a meaningful discussion on air pollution, while taking a jab at the Delhi Chief Minister for reportedly downplaying the issue. He emphasized that pollution cannot be effectively tackled without reducing fuel consumption, suggesting limits on petrol and diesel usage and restricting individuals to owning a single car.
