The monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to end on August 21, but proceedings in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are repeatedly getting stalled as the opposition continues to protest over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) caste survey in Bihar.
On Monday, the Lok Sabha had to be adjourned when the ongoing discussion on Commander Shubhanshu Shukla’s successful mission to the International Space Station (ISS) was repeatedly interrupted by the opposition’s uproar.
During the session, the opposition parties lodged strong protests not only over the SIR survey but also over issues related to the Election Commission. The proceedings of the House were adjourned due to the continuous disruption, which will now resume on August 19 at 11 am.
Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, criticized the opposition, saying that it is not even appreciating India’s recent space achievements. He said, “It is surprising that the opposition is silent even when the country has shown its strength in space and has also achieved success in Operation Sindoor.”
Dr Singh initiated a discussion on Shubhnshu Shukla’s return from the ISS mission, but opposition MPs continued sloganeering and protests. To this he responded, “You can be angry with the government or a party, but being angry with an astronaut who is a disciplined soldier of the Indian Air Force and is not associated with any party is beyond comprehension.”
He quipped, “You are angry with the ground, angry with the sky and now you are angry with space as well.”
Underlining the role of space technology in Operation Sindoor, Dr Singh said that India’s progress in this field has been possible only under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. He also said that the country has always had scientific talent, but before 2014 the space policy did not get a clear direction.
