A tourist from Assam who survived the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, shared how he managed to escape without any injuries, even after coming face to face with a terrorist.
Associate Professor Debasish Bhattacharyya from Assam University said that when the terrorist came near him, he began loudly reciting the Kalima (a holy Islamic verse), according to a report by India Today.
He was in Pahalgam with his family and said he joined a group of people who were already reciting the Kalima as the Terrorist approached.
Assam Professor Recalls Chilling Moment with Terrorist
Associate Professor Debasish Bhattacharyya, shared his terrifying experience when he came face to face with a terrorist but managed to escape unharmed.
“A terrorist walked up to me. Then he looked at me and asked, ‘What are you doing?’”
In response, Bhattacharyya began reciting the Kalima loudly.
“He asked me, ‘What are you saying?’ I kept repeating La ilaha illallah… For some reason, he turned and left,” he recalled.
Bhattacharyya said he wasn’t directly told to recite the Kalima but followed others who were doing so.
“I wasn’t directly asked to recite the Kalima, but I heard others doing it under the tree, and I followed them. I heard the man asking someone if they were taking ‘Ram Naam’,” Bhattacharyya added.
The Assam government has taken steps to ensure the safe return of Bhattacharyya and his family. The Chief Minister’s Office shared on X, “The entire family’s return to the State is being arranged on priority and the Govt of Assam is in touch with Govt of India to bring the family back to Assam at the earliest.”

Family Safe, Professor Confirms; India Responds Strongly After Deadly Terror Attack
Professor Bhattacharyya confirmed that he and his family are safe. They are currently being helped by authorities and are expected to reach Srinagar on April 26.
The terror attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday shocked the entire country. The attack killed 26 people and caused widespread fear and sadness. A terror group called The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility.
In response to the attack, India took strong action by reducing its diplomatic ties with Pakistan. This included suspending several important agreements, such as the Indus Waters Treaty and the SAARC visa exemption for Pakistani citizens.
