Imphal: Manipur government has urgently sought a report from Assam Rifles following a troubling incident of over 700 Myanmar nationals illegally entering India within a span of just two days – July 22 and July 23. Shockingly, these individuals lacked proper travel documents but managed to enter the country.
The timing of these illegal entries has raised significant concerns, given the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur due to heightened tensions between the majority Meitei community and the Kukis.
Fear of smuggled arms and ammunition
Sources cited by NDTV reveal that the Manipur government is worried that these Myanmar nationals may have brought arms and ammunition with them, but there is currently no means of verifying this suspicion.
Based on a report from Headquarters 28 Sector Assam Rifles, 718 refugees from Myanmar entered Manipur through Chandel district on July 23, seeking refuge due to clashes in Khampat.
Meanwhile, Manipur’s Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi expressed grave concerns and utmost sensitivity regarding the fresh illegal entry of 718 refugees. The state government acknowledges the potential international ramifications, particularly given the ongoing law and order issues.
Manipur govt calls for immediate action
To address the situation, the Manipur government has not only sought a comprehensive report from Assam Rifles but has also advised them to promptly push back the 700 Myanmar nationals. Additionally, the Chandel deputy commissioner and SP have been directed to investigate the matter thoroughly and collect biometric data from all individuals involved.
Ethnic strife in Manipur continues
Manipur has been embroiled in an ethnic crisis since May 3, stemming from the Tribal Solidarity March held in the state. The march sparked tensions between the Meitei tribes and the Kukis, as the Meiteis demanded inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe list. Despite a visit by Home Minister Amit Shah, the situation remains tense, and the state continues to mourn the loss of over 150 lives. Furthermore, internet services remain suspended in the region.
