The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday released the draft electoral rolls for West Bengal after completing a month-long Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The revision has led to the removal of more than 58 lakh names from the voter list ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
According to official data, around 24 lakh names were removed as the voters were reported deceased. About 19 lakh names were deleted because the voters had moved out of their constituencies. The Commission also found nearly 1.3 lakh duplicate entries, while around 12 lakh names were marked as missing.
The Election Commission said the exercise was conducted to improve the accuracy and reliability of the electoral rolls by removing duplicate and ineligible entries. It added that such revisions are a routine process to ensure free and fair elections.

The large number of deletions is expected to trigger political debate in the state, with opposition parties likely to closely examine the process and its outcome.
The Commission has asked voters to carefully check the draft electoral rolls. Those whose names are missing or marked for deletion can file claims and objections within the specified period to ensure their inclusion before the final rolls are published.
