New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed that there was over 4.6 lakh road accidents in the year 2022 acorss India. Meanwhile, a report also highlighted the the urgency of adopting a comprehensive approach to curb such accidents in the nation.
In a press release, the Centre said, “… a total of 4,61,312 road accidents have been reported by States and Union Territories (UTs) during the calendar year 2022, which claimed 1,68,491 lives and caused injuries to 4,43,366 persons. This marks an increase of 11.9% in accidents, 9.4% in fatalities, and 15.3% in injuries compared to the previous year.”
The ministry said, “The report underscores the urgency of adopting a comprehensive approach to address the contributing factors to these accidents, including speeding, reckless driving, drunken driving, and non-compliance with traffic regulations. It is crucial that we strengthen enforcement mechanisms, enhance driver education and training programs, and invest in improving the condition of roads and vehicles.”
The details were published in report called “Road Accidents in India-2022” that serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders in the realm of road safety.
The Ministry is dedicated to implementing strong measures to reduce road accidents. It is actively addressing various aspects like improving road user behavior, enhancing road infrastructure, setting vehicle standards, enforcing traffic regulations, and leveraging technology for accident prevention.

Since road accidents have multiple causes, a comprehensive approach is necessary, requiring the coordinated efforts of both Central and State Governments, as well as various organizations and stakeholders.
The Ministry, in collaboration with these entities, has devised a multifaceted strategy to tackle road safety, focusing on all four key areas: Education, Engineering (in terms of both roads and vehicles), Enforcement, and Emergency Care.
Additionally, the Ministry is engaged in initiatives such as introducing modern transportation systems, conducting road safety assessments, and learning from international best practices through collaborations.
Initiatives like the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) for real-time data analysis and the establishment of automated vehicle inspection centers are also in progress to combat road accidents effectively.
