New Delhi: The first batch of stranded Indians on Tuesday left Sudan in INS Sumedha with 278 people onboard under Operation Kaveri.

INS Sumedha departed from Port Sudan to Jeddah.

Earlier om Monday, External affair minister S Jaishankar said India’s operation to evacuate its citizen is underway.

In a tweet, he said that around 500 Indians had reached a port in Sudan. The rescue operation has been named Operation Kaveri by the government.

“Operation Kaveri gets underway to bring back our citizens stranded in Sudan. About 500 Indians have reached Port Sudan. More on their way. Our ships and aircraft are set to bring them back home. Committed to assisting all our brethren in Sudan,” tweeted the foreign minister.

Violence broke out in Sudan between forces loyal to Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy-turned-rival Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. Daglo commands the powerful paramilitary forces.

Recently PM Modi held a high-level meeting and instructed to make proper arrangements to evacuate Indians.
