At Attari Railway Station, located in Punjab’s Amritsar, near the India-Pakistan border, a passport and visa were once required for entry. To get off or catch a train at this railway station, having a Pakistani visa and passport was mandatory. Anyone found without the required documents could face legal consequences.
Train service discontinued since 2019
The Attari Sham Singh railway station serves as the departure point for the Samjhauta Express, a train that links India and Pakistan. This train that connected Delhi to Lahore was, however, discontinued since 2019. The service has been suspended after India revoked Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Samjhauta Express, also known as ‘Mohabbat Di Gaddi’ or ‘Train of Love’, was started on July 22, 1976. The agreement to run it was formally reached after the Shimla Agreement between former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistan President Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in 1972. Currently, 11 coaches of the Indian train and 16 coaches of the Pakistani train remain at Attari Railway Station in India.
