On-Call And Off-Duty: Karnataka Railway Clerk Suspended For Neglecting Passengers

A railway clerk named C Mahesh at Yadgir railway station in Karnataka was suspended after a viral video showed him ignoring a long queue of passengers while engaged in a personal phone call during duty.

A passenger recorded a video while walking through the railway station in Karnataka, showing a ticket clerk at his window, talking on a cell phone, seemingly oblivious to the long line of passengers waiting at the window. According to a witness, the ticket clerk kept saying “one minute” to all the impatient passengers waiting for nearly fifteen minutes. The uploaded video on social media went viral.

According to various reports, railway management took notice and later suspended the clerk. In the video, the employee was sitting at the ticket counter, talking on the phone while passengers were standing at his ticket window. Some of the people in line were relatively polite when they asked the clerk for help, but he was too busy talking on the phone to respond.

One disgruntled traveller pointed out that the clerk was saying “one minute” but continued to talk on the phone. Irritation among passengers turned into anger, and he hung up the phone and started issuing tickets.

The video went viral on social media and has whipped up public indignation. One user on X, formerly Twitter, said, “A railway ticket clerk in Yadgir busy on his personal call while desperate passengers shout for help. No apology or even basic courtesy. This is not just negligence but an attitude of a government servant enjoying impunity. Are tax-paying citizens cattle class passengers?”

After public outcry, RailSeva confirmed the implicated staff member, C Mahesh, had been suspended. The rapid action was taken after a careful commuter sent video of the incident to the station master, according to the India Today account.

The suspension was later confirmed by Station Manager Bhagirath Meena, saying Mahesh was removed from duty for negligence in fulfilling his responsibilities.
