October Festivals 2025: Significance

The month of October is also very eventful this year. As we prepare to celebrate each of the festivals, here is the significance of celebrating some of the poignant festivals.

Maha Navami: Navratri festivals and Durga Puja symbolize the victory of good over evil, the culmination of devotion, and the blessings of Goddess Durga for strength, wisdom, and prosperity. On the day of Maha Navami, Hindu devotees offer Kanjak Puja (the worship of young girls) as they are the divine forms of Maa Durga.

Vijayaadashami/Dussehra: Vijayadashami (also known as Dussehra) symbolizes the victory of good over evil, honoring the victory of Maa Durga over the demon Mahishasura and of Lord Rama over Ravana.

Karwa Chauth: The Karwa Chauth fasting ritual is undertaken by married women in honor of their husbands’ longevity and prosperity within their marriages. It is mandatory to perform this sacred ritual as a nirjala or waterless fast, wherein women worship Goddess Karva Mata. The fast is completed only after the moon is sighted in the night sky.

Diwali: Diwali, also referred to as Deepavali, is celebrated in honor of the return of Prince Rama, Mata Sita, and his brother, Lakshman, after an exile that lasted for 14 years due to winning the war against Ravana. The festival is celebrated by worshipping Lakshmi Puja, lighting traditional diyas, and decorating homes with lights and flowers that twinkle.
