Lucknow: A day after Uttar Pradesh government declared to conduct a survey of unrecognized madrassas, All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday termed the exercise as mini-NRC and said that the state government wants to harass muslims.

“Madrassas are as per Article 30 then why UP govt has ordered the survey? It’s not a survey but a mini-NRC. Some madrassas are under the UP madrassa board. Government can’t interfere with our rights under Art 30. They want to harass Muslims,” news agency ANI quoted Owaisi as saying.

The UP government on Wednesday passed an order to conduct a survey of unrecognised madrassas to find out information about the number of students, teachers, curriculum and basic facilities there.

The survey, according to the Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Danish Azad Ansari, will be conducted in accordance with the requirement of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

The decision was taken after consultation with staff members and teachers at madrassas, Ansari said.

The minister added that information about the number of teachers, its curriculum, source of income will also be collected.

At present, there are about 16,461 madrassas in Uttar Pradesh, out of which 560 are given government grants. Moreover, it is learned that new madrassas have not been included in the grant list for the last six years in the state.
