‘Not Anticipating Anything’: Shashi Tharoor Responds To Criticism From Congress Leaders

Earlier on June 1, the Congress MP had highlighted the mission of their outreach, which was to inform the world about India’s tough stand on terrorism and its response, while holding discussion with international counterparts.

Congress leader and all-Party Delegation Leader MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday reacted to criticism from his party members regarding his recent statements. He stated that he is not anticipating anything because he hasn’t been told anything directly. Tharoor remarked that he is seeing all this in the media and some of it is speculative. He clearly stated that the delegation wad focused, united and effectively briefed the world about the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan’s involvement in it and Operation Sindoor – which was India’s response.

What Did Tharoor Say?

In his conversation with ANI, Tharoor said that he will look into the matter (statements from Congress leaders) once he lands back in India. He asserted that, for now, what is important is to take note of the unity displayed in the all-party delegation.

“Look, there will be a time for internal discussions when one gets back. I’m not anticipating anything because I’ve not been told anything directly. All I’m seeing is in the media, and some of it is speculative, but on the whole, my view very much is that we are at the moment facing a situation where the country is united and that unity was very apparent in the delegation,” Tharoor said.

Notably, earlier on June 1, the Congress MP had highlighted the mission of their outreach, which was to inform the world about India’s tough stand on terrorism and its response, while holding discussion with international counterparts. He also reiterated that, right now, the entire country stands united.

What’s The Matter?

Tharoor had come under attack from several leaders in his party, who even dubbed him a “Spokesperson for the BJP’ for his recent statement in Panama. In Panama, Tharoor stated that India has changed its approach in recent years, and terrorists now realise they will have to pay a price. While he was reiterating India’s stance against terrorism, what didn’t sit well with Congress leaders was his mention of the Uri Surgical Strike and Balakot Air Strike – both of which were carried out during PM Modi’s tenure.

Tharoor’s statement was taken negatively by Congress leaders like Udit Raj, Pawan Khera and Jairam Ramesh. These leaders accused Tharoor of maligning Congress’ image and undermining UPA’s achievement in countering terrorism.

Congress leader Udit Raj told ANI, “Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is the super spokesperson of the BJP, and what the BJP leaders are not saying, speaking in favour of PM Modi and the government, Shashi Tharoor is doing… Does he even know what the earlier governments used to do? They (the Central government) are taking credit for the Indian Armed Forces. Shashi Tharoor has become the spokesperson for the publicity stunts of the BJP.”
