Dwarka Expressway: Detailed Planning And Construction

The 29-km-long Dwarka Expressway starts from Mahipalpur in Delhi and stretches up to Kherki Daula in Gurugram. Of this, 10.1 km is in Delhi and 18.9 km in Haryana. The project has been developed in four packages at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore and is designed in such a way that it can reduce the burden on busy routes like NH-48.

It is an eight-lane grade-separated expressway, which also includes three-lane service roads on both sides. Traffic is allowed to move forward without interruption through multi-level interchanges and underpasses. The special thing is that about 70% of this expressway is elevated, due to which it remains almost separate from urban traffic. In this, traffic moves at three levels – elevated road, surface road and underpass network.

Urban Extension Road-2 will play an important role in this network. It provides an alternative route to connect the western part of Delhi and the airport, which will reduce the pressure on busy routes like Ring Road and Outer Ring Road.

To make traffic more efficient, NHAI has issued tenders to implement the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system. This technology allows vehicles to cross the toll without stopping, which will reduce both traffic jams and pollution.

Connectivity With Delhi’s IGI Airport

A special feature of this project is a direct tunnel, which connects the expressway directly to the IGI airport. This tunnel will provide a fast and convenient route for passengers and cargo vehicles. Its trial runs were successfully completed in May 2025.

With the inauguration of these mega projects, the connectivity and travel efficiency of Delhi-NCR is expected to improve significantly. This is considered to be another strong step towards India’s modern and smart infrastructure.
