No Hindu Names For Muslim Shops: Controversial Statement By UP Minister Before Kanwar Yatra

Kapil Dev Agarwal stated that Muslim shopkeepers at the Kanwar fair should not name their shops after Hindu deities. He stressed that while they can run their shops, transparency is needed to prevent controversies.

Preparations for the Kanwar Yatra in the month of Sawan are in full swing. The Uttar Pradesh government and administration are actively involved in organizing the yatra. Ahead of the event, Uttar Pradesh minister Kapil Dev Agarwal met with Kanwar camp operators in Muzaffarnagar. Following the meeting, Agarwal stated that Muslim shopkeepers at the Kanwar fair should refrain from operating their shops under Hindu deity names.

Kapil Dev Agarwal stated that in the Kanwar fair, Muslim shopkeepers should not name their shops after Hindu deities. He emphasized that while they are welcome to operate their shops, transparency is necessary to avoid controversies. Agarwal highlighted concerns that Kanwariyas, who visit and consume tea and water there, might misunderstand the names leading to disputes later. Therefore, clarity is essential from the outset to prevent any future issues.

A few days ago, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar met with officials to discuss security arrangements for the upcoming Kanwar Yatra and Muharram. He provided various guidelines and emphasized creating a security plan for the procession routes using digital volunteers and civil defense.

The DGP instructed that no new traditions should be allowed and the Kanwar Yatra routes should be inspected in advance. He also ordered additional police forces to be deployed in areas with mixed populations and hotspots. The DGP emphasized that a strict watch should be kept on troublemakers and more police should be stationed at sensitive locations.

The officers were instructed to keep CCTV cameras along the procession routes active and to boost security at railway stations and bus stands. They were also told to implement the zone sector scheme and increase checks at the most sensitive locations. The DGP directed them to monitor social media around the clock.
