Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered a CBI investigation into the sexual assault and murder of a post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The court has instructed the Kolkata Police to immediately hand over all relevant documents to the CBI.
A protesting doctor expressed relief at the decision, saying, ‘We are very happy and relieved that the case has been transferred to CBI. The accused will be arrested soon now.’
High Court Scrutiny Ignites Nationwide Doctor Protests
Earlier today, doctors and medical students held a protest at AIIMS Delhi after the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services starting Tuesday in solidarity with the case.
Additionally, the Calcutta High Court earlier asked Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, to submit a leave application. This comes after Ghosh’s appointment as principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, following his resignation from RG Kar College, sparked protests.
Sandip Ghosh resigned from his position as principal at RG Kar Medical College on Monday, claiming that he was being defamed on social media following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the hospital premises.

Chief Justice Questions Ghosh’s New Role
The Chief Justice division bench of the Calcutta HC was considering several PILs related to the case on Tuesday. During the hearing, the Chief Justice questioned Ghosh’s appointment, asking, “How can the principal who resigned by taking moral responsibility be appointed as the principal of another government college?” The court has directed him to submit a leave application by 3 pm today, warning that if he fails to do so, the court will pass an order for him to vacate the position.
On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The investigation confirmed that she had been raped and murdered. Reports indicate that the body bore scratch marks, suggesting a struggle occurred during the incident. The victim’s family has alleged that she was raped and murdered.
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister JP Nadda held a meeting with a delegation from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday. The IMA has called for an impartial and thorough investigation into the case, demanding that the West Bengal government punish the culprits. The IMA also wrote to the health minister, requesting a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that allowed the crime to occur, as well as measures to improve the safety of doctors, particularly women, in the workplace.
