The metro coaches showcased motifs of Madhubani, signifying the indigenous art of Bihar, Madhubani. With this, Patna will be the 24th Indian city to get its own operational metro rail system.

As per media reports, each train can carry 900 passengers at a time, with every coach designed to hold 300 people. For now, the metro line will be available at an interval of every 20 minutes.

Nitish Kumar’s Dream Project

The project was envisioned over a decade ago. The project was approved by the State Cabinet on June 11, 2013, when the NDA-led Bihar Government had cleared the proposal to prepare a detailed project report. The Union Government gave its nod in June 2014, paving the way for a five-phase construction plan. Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone for the city’s first metro corridor on February 17, 2019, followed by the formal establishment of the Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited a day later.

DMRC was roped in as the project consultant, while infrastructure major L&T secured the contract in January 2022. The estimated cost of the Patna Metro project stands at Rs 13,925.5 crore.
