New Delhi: Union Minister Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari announced projects worth Road 1.6 lakh crore in the North East.
The projects include Roads, Ropeways, RoBs, major bridges across river brahmaputra and other water bodies. The union minister also said multi-modal logistics parks have been also proposed at Udaipur in Tripura & Silchar in Assam, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways in a statement said.
“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi we’re working towards bridging the connectivity gap in North East India and giving momentum to transport infrastructure in the region,” the minister said.
The Minister said around 50 Way Side Amenities and 50 View Points are also being developed. Once completed, it would give significant boost to the Tourism sector and economy in North Eastern region, he added.
The union minister made the announcement at a press conference of the review of NH projects in the North East Region in Guwahati, Assam.
In a Twitter thread, later, the minister said he has announced upcoming new sanctioned projects for Meghalaya at the total cost of Rs.12,500 Crores at the press conference.
The project, he says, includes: (I) Shillong-Western Bypass with a total length of 38 km and total cost of Rs. 2205 crore. It will smoothen the traffic coming from Guwahati that will be diverted to Shillong and boost interstate trade development.

(II) Dainadubi-Darugre-Williamnagar with a total length of 80 Km and total cost of 4350 crore. It will boost interstate connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya and boost socio-economic development in the region. It is a major route for coal transporters from all parts of Garo Hills.
(III) Mawlyngkhung-Mawryngkneng (Shillong Eastern Bypass), Mawryngkneng- West Jaintia Hills & Jowai bypass with a total length of 75 km and total cost of Rs. 4100 crore. It would enhance better regional connectivity and decongest traffic.
(IV) Paikan-Tura with a total length of 56 km and total cost of Rs 1827 crore. It would further PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision of Act East policy, Gadkari said in a tweet.
