Former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called India a “friend” that the US needs to counter China. She also said India should take Donald Trump’s concerns about Russian oil seriously. She took to ‘X’ and wrote what she felt about the turbulence that India and US are having on the current Tariff row. She described India as “essential” for the US and urged Washington to see India as a valued democratic partner. The Indian-origin Republican leader has been criticised in her party for appearing to side with India in the trade dispute. But on Saturday, she highlighted that India must also consider US concerns. Apart from the social media platform ‘X’, she also recently wrote in Newsweek. Haley asserted that the two countries must not lose sight of the “shared goals” – to face China. “But, we should not lose sight of what matters most: our shared goals. To face China, the United States must have a friend in India,” she said.
Nikki Haley On X
“India must take Trump’s point over Russian oil seriously, and work with the White House to find a solution. The sooner the better. Decades of friendship and goodwill between the world’s two largest democracies provide a solid basis to move past the current turbulence. Navigating issues like trade disagreements and Russian oil import demands hard dialogue. But we should not lose sight of what matters most: our shared goals. To face China, the United States must have a friend in India.”

Nikki Haley On India-US Ties
In a Newsweek article, Nikki Haley, the former US ambassador to the UN, warned that relations between Washington and New Delhi are close to a breaking point. She said it is important to fix these ties if America wants to control China’s growing global power.
According to her, India should not be treated as an enemy like China. She also said the Trump administration should not let issues like tariffs or the US role in the India-Pakistan truce damage the relationship between the two big democracies.
