He was particularly surprised by the sudden surge in grape orders on New Year’s Eve. “What's with the sudden craze for grapes today?? It's one of the highest ordered items on the platform since morning!” Dhindsa wrote. Customers explained that eating 12 grapes while making a wish at midnight is an age-old tradition, a practice popularized by Sofia Vergara’s character, Gloria, in Modern Family
On BigBasket, sales of non-alcoholic drinks shot up by 552%, while disposable cups and plates saw a 325% increase. Even sodas and mocktails became more popular, with sales jumping by 200%.
Swiggy also recorded impressive numbers, with a peak of 853 orders for chips per minute at 7:30 pm. Among the more unusual items, one customer ordered blindfolds and handcuffs. Meanwhile, ice delivery reached a new high at 7:41 pm, with 119 kgs delivered in a single minute, as reported by Phani Kishan A, co-founder of Swiggy Instamart.
