Modi surname case: A hearing is going on in the Gujarat High Court on Rahul Gandhi’s petition seeking a stay on the conviction and sentence in the Modi surname case. Rahul challenged the order of the Surat sessions court, which dismissed his plea to stay his conviction in a criminal defamation case earlier this month.

Justice Hemant Prachhak is hearing Gandhi’s appeal.

A metropolitan magistrate’s court in Surat convicted Rahul Gandhi under sections 499 and 500 (criminal defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sentenced him to two years in prison.

Earlier on Thursday, the Sessions Court in Gujarat’s Surat rejected the plea moved by Rahul Gandhi seeking a stay on a verdict given by a lower court that convicted him in the matter.

In the latest, the Sessions Court upheld the conviction, which earlier resulted in the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Parliament.
