New Delhi: Following the row over “Rashtrapati” comment, National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday summoned Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on August 3. The NCW has sought a written explanation over the derogatory remarks of the latter.

The national commission also asked the Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi to intervene in the matter while demanding an action against Chowdhury for his derogatory remark.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Chowdhury admitted that it was a mistake and he is willing to apologise to President Draupadi Murmu even in person.

The Congress leader further lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for misbehaving with the party interim chief Sonia Gandhi.

Said Congress leader Chowdhury: “I accepted my mistake… What do they say about Sonia Gandhi during polls? About Shashi Tharoor’s wife? About Renuka Chowdhury? I sought time from President, might get appointment the day after tomorrow, I’ll speak with her personally.

What happened inside Parliament?

Earlier in the day, Sonia Gandhi and Union Minister Smriti Irani exchanged heated arguments inside the Parliament. The incident occurred after the House witnessed a protest over “Rashtrapatni” comment by Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

The confrontation took place when the slogans were being raised: “Sonia Gandhi Maafi Mango” (Sonia Gandhi apologise). After which, Sonia Gandhi approached Rama Devi standing next to Smriti Irani. Irani, then, tried to initiate talks with Gandhi. Reacting to which, the latter said, “Don’t talk to me.”

The argument between the two continued for several minutes. Meanwhile, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman claimed that Gandhi yelled at Smriti Irani in a threatening voice.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi condemned the act and said: “Today one of the most senior leaders of India who is both an elderly lady, recovering from Covid was attacked. She was subject to insults by one Union Minister and was on the verge of being pushed and injured by the BJP MPs.”

“The brutal heckling, verbal assault and physical intimidation of one of the most dignified ladies of Indian politics Smt. Sonia Gandhi inside by the BJP was traumatic and sickening. That this assault by the BJP MPs took place inside the Parliament reflected the mentality of a mob,” added Gogoi.
