Delhi: Over 200 Sick After Consuming Kuttu Atta During Navratri; Union Minister Chirag Paswan Reacts

Over 200 residents across northwest Delhi, including Jahangirpuri, Mahendra Park, Samaypur, Bhalswa Dairy, Lal Bagh, and Swaroop Nagar, fell ill with symptoms of vomiting and nausea after consuming food made with Kuttu atta (buckwheat flour) during Navratri fasting early on Tuesday morning.

More than 200 individuals fell sick after eating Kuttu atta (buckwheat flour) during Navratri fasting in northwest Delhi on Tuesday. Police said that the illness was reported in several areas of the northwest Delhi districts, including, Jahangirpuri, Mahendra Park, Samaypur, Bhalswa Dairy, Lal Bagh and Swaroop Nagar. As per police, patients were stable and there were no serious cases reported.

At around 6.10 am on Tuesday, officers at the Jahangirpuri police station received reports of numerous people experiencing illness, allegedly from having consumed food made with Kuttu atta (buckwheat flour) during the Navratri period.

Food Processing Industries Minister Chirag Paswan Responds

Food Processing Industries Minister Chirag Paswan promised an investigation into the food poisoning incident affecting about 200 people in northwest Delhi after they consumed buckwheat flour (‘kuttu ka atta’) in the context of fasting during Navratri.

“This issue does not come directly under my ministry. Definitely, it is our responsibility if such issues come, there should be an investigation. We will not compromise on the quality of the processed foods,” he said after news about the mass illness broke out.

Many people fell sick with complaints of dizziness, vomiting, and loose motions after eating Kuttu (buckwheat) flour in the Jahangirpuri area, and the patients were taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital. The official said that police received information about many people complaining of restlessness, vomiting , loose motion, and dizziness in the morning; and till now about 150 to 200 patients have been admitted to the emergency ward of Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital. When the food department contacted, government officers started to investigate the case.
