In a recent survey by Time Out, Mumbai was ranked 14th on the list of the world’s top 20 food cities. The city’s lively street food scene and the famous Jini Dosa were the main highlights.
Mumbai has been ranked as one of the 20 best food cities in the world, according to a survey by Time Out. Last year, it was ranked 8th globally.
New Orleans (Louisiana, US) was ranked number one, followed by Bangkok (Thailand) and Medellín (Colombia). The rankings were based on both the quality and cost of food, as well as reviews from a panel of Time Out food experts, including editors, critics, and chefs. Only the highest-scoring city from each country made it to the final list.
Time Out highlighted Mumbai’s lively food streets, called Khau Gallis, which stretch from Zaveri Bazaar in the south to Ghatkopar in the north. These are the best places to enjoy a quick and delicious meal.
Time Out said, “The best places for a quick meal when you’re hungry are the food streets, or Khau Gallis, that stretch from Zaveri Bazaar in the south to Ghatkopar in the north. Here, you’ll find tasty chaat, big sandwiches, veggie-filled ‘pizzas’, Beirut-style frankie wraps, and falooda topped with dry fruits. Every bite is bold and full of flavor!”
Among the many street food options in Mumbai, Jini Dosa stood out. It’s a crispy dosa made from lentil and rice batter, filled with colorful vegetables, topped with Schezwan sauce, local cheese, and served as bite-sized rolls. The version in Vile Parle’s Khau Galli got special mention.

Mumbai’s food scene was also rated the healthiest on the list, with 61% of locals saying it is both “delicious and healthy.” In addition, 87% of Mumbai residents gave the city’s overall food scene a high rating.
