Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation’s long-delayed plan for the extension of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is likely to get the approval from state cabinet within the next two months, said officials.
Under this process, there is a plan for the expansion of a 94-km long expressway. This route from Mumbai to Pune will be expanded from three lanes to eight lanes. The proposal for the expansion of the route was submitted last year but got delayed due to elections.
As quoted by Pune Pulse, a senior officer stated that “With all stakeholders’ recommendations in place, we expect the cabinet will clear the project soon.” He further mentioned that further delays are unlikely in this project.
To solve the problem of traffic, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has proposed the inclusion of one lane on the side near the Madap and Bhatan. Similarly inclusion of two lanes on each side near Kamshet. The process of expansion will happen in two phases. Once it get the approval from the state government the project will get completed within three years, as per media reports.
After the project gets the approval, it will be allotted with Rs 2,500 crore for the construction work in Phase 1, as per media reports.
The cost of the project is approximately Rs 5000 crore. Under this comes construction and land acquisition. According to media reports, currently, around 60,000-70,000 vehicles run on each side of the road per day. This number reaches 90,000 on weekends.
