The first high speed expressway of India is the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. In the year 1999 a part of expressway was made open for the public. And by the year 2002, the whole stretch was functional.
From last 25-years the expressway is open for the general public. The then PM of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee contributed substantial amount for the development of the expressway. The expressway connects the two cities- Mumbai and Pune. An estimated cost of Rupees 1630 crore was spent on the expressway, as per media reports.
The expressway began from Kalamboli near Navi Mumbai and it continues till Kiwale in Pune City. The expressway covers a distance of 94.5-km.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway was developed by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The expressway is beneficial for the commuters. It cuts the travel time from three hours to one hour.
Toll Rates Jump 18%
The toll of the expressway got raised 6% annually, and cumulative rise of 18% every three.
Last year the toll amount was raised to Rupees 320 and this growth was from Rs 270. Apart from this toll amount for vehicles like minibuses and tempos was raised from Rs 420 to Rs 495.
Currently the toll amount for two-axle vehicles got raised to Rs 685 which was previously Rs 585.
The buses using that expressway used to pay amount of Rs 787 as toll but now they have to pay Rs 940. According to officials, the charges won’t be changed after three years which is 2026 and will remain same till the year 2030.
